Commissioned by the HKIA CPD Research Fund, “Quarantine Tourism” reframes the problem posed by the pandemic as an architectural opportunity – To imagine a hybrid typology combining tourism & quarantine that forms Pandemic Buffer Zones in the urban-rural fringe: facilitating temporary occupation of meditative ‘staycation’ and doubling as quarantine facilities during pandemics.

Through mapping research, case studies of quarantine establishments in Hong Kong, as well as past and foreign isolation typologies, this research formulates proposals for the hybrid programme of “Quarantine Tourism” in the urban-rural setting. With many quarantine facilities unused after the winding down of pandemic, the research also explores reimagining the existing quarantine centres at Penny's Bay for Post-COVID. Interview transcripts, photos, diagrams, and models invites the audience to reassess the quarantine centres and brainstorm for their afterlife.
