Tour Synopsis

Luen Wo Market located in Fanling, is recently revitalised into “House of Urban and Rural Living”. Luen Wo Market is one of the historic buildings included in Batch V of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme. It is a Grade 3 Historic Building, was built in 1951, and is the first privately built market in the post war Hong Kong. The revitalised Luen Wo Market is now a place to collaborate with local farmers to sell local agricultural products, to set up community stalls to sell handicrafts and to organize holiday outdoor bazaar to sell traditional food and crafts, all aiming to continue the essence of the original market. The market began operation on 28 March 2024 by the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service.

In the tour, the team members will share the story and their experience of the whole revitalisation process, from the perspective of the operator, architect and heritage consultant, about the challenges and opportunities when revitalizing Luen Wo Market. Benjamin Tsang and Choi Kit Wang, the Project Architects oversee the revitalization project and the interior design; Wendy Ng, the Heritage Consultant takes care of the conservation issues; Fanny Wong plans and manages the operation of the Luen Wo Market.
