Overview
Design thrives on feedback. Without clear measures of success or meaningful critique, it's difficult to know whether a design truly meets its goals. As generative Al becomes increasingly powerful in producing design options, a critical question emerges: Al can generate, but what comes next? This seminar explores the growing gap between generation and evaluation in Al-assisted design, highlighting the urgent need for more effective feedback mechanisms.
We will begin by examining foundational concepts such as evidence-based design and post-occupancy evaluation to ground the discussion in human-centered outcomes.
Drawing on both historical research on computational design tools and recent studies on Al-powered systems, the seminar will explore how these tools influence creativity - their potential to support idea exploration and problem framing, as well as the risks of fixation, over-reliance, and diminished agency. We will also examine cutting-edge co-creative AI systems that are beginning to facilitate feedback and reflection within the design process.
Finally, we will consider how designers can engage more effectively with Al by developing metacognitive skills and Al literacy, both essential for making thoughtful, reflective use of these emerging tools.
