The redevelopment of Stanley Outdoor Training Camp seeks to activate the quieter southern side of Stanley. The beachfront of St. Stephen’s Bay is cradled by a hilly backdrop, and to our west our neighbour is a Ficus Elastica with a lush, emerald crown. To minimize disturbances to the tree during and after construction, we skewed the massing into a parallelogram, which created our distinctive building form. The Ficus in return shields us from the western sun. The bespoke 2-sided perforated façade is a unique design that camouflages our building into the surrounding. It is an effective second skin to mitigate solar heat gain. Climate change is a reality that requires a resilient envelope design and the planning of a curved wave wall along the shore. The arrangement of the building’s interior is centred around a stack of social spaces; they promote interaction among users and allows for north-south ventilation.
