In the densely populated city of Hong Kong, this public art installation provides much-needed breathing space and community engagement. The design challenges conventional word art by creating intimate pockets within a gigantic hollow mesh lettering structure, inviting visitors to sit, stretch, or simply contemplate. Inspired by the vibrant colors and lights of Victoria Harbour, the breakwater pavilion extends from the word art, allowing people to pause and enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbor.
Sustainability is a core principle of the project. Over 30,000 recycled plastic bottle caps compose the pavilion, raising awareness about plastic waste reduction. When extreme weather conditions prompted a change, 15,000 recycled plastic ropes replaced the caps, continuing the architect's sustainable journey.
By blending cultural references, environmental consciousness, and community engagement, this harbourfront project aims to boost a sense of belonging and pride for all who experience it.
