The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers Structural Division (HKIE STL), the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Quantity Surveying Division (HKIS QSD), and the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM), successfully held the first cross‑institutes joint visit to the Chinese Medicine Hospital and the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute on 24 January 2026.
The event received an enthusiastic response, with HKIA receiving around 180 applications within the first two days! However, due to limited capacity, a total of 150 members from the four Institutes were confirmed to join the visit. We are pleased to bring together professionals from architectural, engineering, surveying, and construction sectors to explore this landmark public healthcare project.
The programme was really comprehensive and inspiring. In addition to the guided tour of the two state‑of‑the‑art facilities where traditional Chinese medicine principles meet modern technology, the professional sharing session was another major highlight. We were honoured to have Ar. Johnnie LAI, Ar. Stephen CHAN, and Ir. Yi ZHANG introducing the project to all our members. Drawing from the philosophical foundations of Chinese medicine, they discussed concepts such as the “Union of Heaven and Humanity”, “Dao and Qi” and “Yin‑Yang Binary Concept’’, illustrating how these ideas were articulated into contemporary architectural expression and construction detailing. These interdisciplinary dialogues offered all participants a deeper understanding of the essence in the Chinese Medicine Hospital (CMH) and the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the following officiating guests, speakers, and institute representatives (in no particular order):
