Dr. Yu holds a Doctoral Degree of Philosophy in Civil Engineering (Structures), a Master’s Degree in Fire Safety Engineering, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.  He worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, serving as Technical Secretary for the consultancy study contributing to the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel 2005 and its 2011 edition.  He also compiled the Explanatory Materials for the Steel Code for the Buildings Department.  Dr. Yu is the Professional Consultant for the consultancy study of the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Glass 2018 for the Buildings Department.

Dr. Yu actively contributes to both industry and academia through extensive seminar and lecture delivery.  He has presented over 160 technical seminars, including more than 120 seminars since 2012 specifically on “Glass and Façade Engineering”.  These seminars cover statutory requirements, analysis, design, testing, quality control, practical considerations, production, installation, and inspection, and have been delivered to institutions such as HKIE, HKISC, BD, HKIS, HKFA, RICS, HKICW, CIOB, and others.
