Synopsis

Public housing estates in Hong Kong represented a pioneering government project to house the influx of mainland migrants since the 1950s and exemplified great architectural innovation and achievement, some being recognized by the Institute for the outstanding design and executions of the time. After decades of serving the general public, such estates are gradually facing issues as a result of structural deterioration and increasing expectations of quality of living, pressures for higher development density to cope with persistently high housing demands and are being planned for demolition and redevelopment. With half the population living in public housing estates of various generations, however, there is great impact of such redevelopment projects on the social bonds of local neighbourhoods, not to mention that a generation of architectural heritage assets are in danger of being lost. This symposium thus brings together different practitioners, government officials, and academics to share their views on the heritage and future of public housing and alternatives on redevelopment of mass housing.
