Overview:

Pixelated Chronicles is a research and curatorial project that examines Hong Kong’s outlying islands as spaces shaped by layered histories, shifting identities, and overlooked narratives. Over three years, the project has mapped, photographed, and engaged with more than 20 islands through public programmes, exhibitions, and workshops. By working with fragmented perspectives—stories from residents, overlooked infrastructures, found objects—the project explores how spatial meaning is produced and negotiated beyond the urban core. 

These pixelated insights accumulate into a broader inquiry: what does it mean to sustain a place, not just physically, but socially and culturally? Instead of seeking fixed answers, Pixelated Chronicles proposes a way of working that holds space for multiplicity, co-authorship, and slow observation. It sees sustainability not only as conservation or efficiency, but as the ongoing ability to carry forward diverse voices, memories, and ways of living.

Speakers’ Biography:

"Project: As If ___" is a design and research studio founded by architect duo Leroy Cheng and Vanessa Ma. Grounded in architecture but extending into visual culture and narrative systems, the studio investigates how spatial practices shape, and are shaped by structures of visibility, authorship, and power. Through site-responsive research, exhibition-making, and experimental publishing, they trace hidden infrastructures and contested geographies to surface alternative readings of place and identity. Their work proposes design not as a solution, but as a speculative tool to reframe what is seen, recorded, and valued in the built environment.
