HKIA CPD Seminar - “Simple Building”
Over the past decades, building structures and technologies have become increasingly complex, driven by ever-growing requirements for structural safety, thermal and moisture protection, fire safety, acoustics, hygiene, health, and user comfort. This complexity is reflected in a proliferation of standards and regulations, yet the intended quality assurance is often not achieved. Instead, it frequently results in high error rates in design and construction, and places excessive demands on building owners and users.
In response, the “Simply Build” network at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) explores an alternative path: “Simple Building”. Through research and teaching, the network promotes robust, climate-responsive, and buildable solutions that reduce technical over-engineering while maintaining performance and comfort.
This online seminar will introduce the Simple Building concept, present three pilot projects that test its principles in practice, and share the development of guidelines and performance verification based on in-use measurements. Participants will gain insight into how simpler, smarter building strategies can improve reliability, usability and sustainability in contemporary practice.
