We extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Professor Alexander Tzonis, our beloved Honorary Fellow, on 1 March 2026. The global architectural community has lost a pioneering scholar, visionary thinker, and deeply influential educator whose work has shaped generations of architects, theorists, and practitioners.
Professor Tzonis' remarkable career as a distinguished architect, theorist, and critic has left an indelible mark on architectural discourse globally. As a Professor at prestigious institutions including Harvard, University of Technology Delft and Tsinghua University, his intellectual contributions — particularly his pioneering work on "critical regionalism" — have influenced architects and scholars . His unique ability to bridge scientific and humanistic approaches to architecture created a rare and invaluable synthesis that will continue to influence the profession for years to come.
The Hong Kong Institute of Architects hold special gratitude for Professor Tzonis’ significant contributions to the architectural dialogue among Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR. We particularly cherish the memory of his service as a distinguished juror for the HKIA Cross-Strait Architecture Design Awards during 2013, 2015 and 2019 , and keynote speaker for the HKIA Cross-Strait Architecture Design Symposium in 2013 and 2019. His presence and discerning judgment enriched these awards immensely, fostering greater understanding and exchange among architects across the strait. His commitment to elevating architectural discourse in our region reflected his broader dedication to education and cross-cultural collaboration.
Professor Tzonis legacy is one of intellectual generosity and a steadfast belief in architecture as both a cultural and ethical endeavour. His work continues to guide architects in addressing the challenges of our time with sensitivity, innovation, and responsibility.
We offer our sincerest condolences to members of his family. May he rest in peace!
