Public toilets always have many negative impressions, such as slippery floors, dirty and smelly, which are social problems common in most of the big cities like Hong Kong. Tourists or citizens are often reluctant to use public toilets even if they are in need. With the announcement of the "Smart City Blueprint 2.0" by the Government in December 2020 and the threatening of COVID-19 pandemic, Pak Shek Kok Smart Public Toilet adopting diversified design with application of new technologies is a new innovation and interpretation. Not only addressing the social problems to improve the overall hygiene and service levels of public toilets, it also aims to uplift the social image of public toilets. This pioneer smart public toilet sets a new milestone in the planning and design of new public toilets in Hong Kong, leading to a low-carbon transformation in Hong Kong. Its success was overwhelmingly appreciated by mass media and recognized by winning the Golden Award in the “2023 Best Toilet Competition” organized by the Hong Kong Toilet Association. More interesting story about the making of this smart public toilet will be introduced in the guided tour.
