Overview:

The rural landscape of Hong Kong was often being narrated historically as the Barren Rock, or in some other cases a vernacular landscape of traditional villages. Contemporary issues and development proposals encircling these areas were, however, inviting more public attention and becoming more debated in recent years.

Responding to this seemingly disconnection between its historical narration and the contemporary condition, this research is an attempt to re-construct an alternative historiography of this ‘unnatural nature’ in Hong Kong based on evolving patterns of urban extractions and social negotiations. More specifically, the rural community at Pokfulam was taken as the site for a detailed case study.

Speakers’ Bio:

The duo’s primary research focus has been on the social processes and urban interactions that shape the physical environment and define the local communities in Hong Kong. They have specifically explored contemporary issues in Hong Kong such as gentrifying neighbourhoods, bottom-up communities, infrastructural urbanism and most recently rural dynamics. Their research was numerously presented at academic symposiums and conferences.

In parallel, the duo have deployed extensively the medium of illustration as part of their research and creative practice. Their storytelling and design work were widely awarded and exhibited over the past decade.
