PROJECTING FUTURE HERITAGE: A HONG KONG ARCHIVE

HKIA Venice Biennale and Roving Architecture Exhibitions 2025/26: Second Stop in Shanghai Officially Opened

Showcasing Hong Kong's Architectural Intelligence and Fostering Cross-City Dialogue

The Shanghai stop of Hong Kong's official exhibition at the Biennale Architettura 2025 was kicked off on 14 June 2026, with an opening ceremony officiated by:

  • Our Guest of Honour, Miss Drew LAI, the Commissioner for Cultural and Creative Industries of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
  • Ar. Allen POON, Chairman, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation
  • The Honourable Ar. Julia LAU FHKIA CMILT CStJ JP, President, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects
  • Curator Ar. Fai AU
  • Curator Dr. Ying Zhou
  • Curator Ar. Sunnie SY LAU

The roving exhibitions in other cities feature a filmic documentation that fully presents the entirety of the physical archive of Hong Kong's public architectures showcased in Venice. They feature a curated selection of physical architectural measured drawings excerpted from the archive showcased in Venice, alongside a physical archival drawer that serves as an artefact from the Hong Kong exhibition at the Biennale. Opening the components of this archival setup identical to the one in Venice, visitors can reveal the ephemera from the exhibition back in 2025, as well as a measured architectural model of the original showcase.

At the centrepieces of the roving exhibitions is a re-adaptation of an installation set up at the della Tana courtyard during the Biennale, bringing the imprint of "Staging the Archive" from Venice to Shanghai, which will be transposed later to Hong Kong. Ultimately, the space allows visitors to actively perform their own immersive journey between the archival and the projective, engaging directly with found objects that bridge Venice and Hong Kong to experience the profound interconnectedness of their architectural contexts.

The exhibition is organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation (HKIABF), with The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) as partner, the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of the HKSAR Government as the lead sponsor, and Design Republic as the venue partner of the Shanghai Exhibition.
